Italian medievalist, philosopher and writer Umberto Eco, best known for his novel "The Name of the Rose", has died at the age of 84 years.
According to members of his family, the writer died Friday night at his home. Other details were not disclosed.
Umberto Eco was born in the small town of Alessandria near Turin in 1932.
In 1954 he graduated from the University of Turin, where he studied medieval philosophy and literature.
